Why Eating Less Isn't Helping You Lose Weight

November 03, 2026•3 min read

If you've been eating less, cutting calories, and shrinking your portions but still struggling to lose weight after 50, I want you to consider something.

What if eating less isn't the answer?

For years, women have been told that weight loss is simple: eat less and move more. But if you've ever tried surviving on tiny portions and low-calorie meals, you probably know how difficult that approach can be to maintain.

I remember working in corporate health promotion back in the 90s and watching women try to lose weight by barely eating. They lived on Lean Cuisine meals and SlimFast, stayed hungry all day, and eventually reached a point where they couldn't stick to it anymore.

They would restrict, overeat, feel guilty, and start the cycle all over again.

Sound familiar?

The problem wasn't necessarily their willpower. Their approach simply wasn't designed to keep them satisfied.

Why Restrictive Diets Often Backfire

When your meals are built around low-volume, low-calorie foods, you might technically be in a calorie deficit, but that doesn't mean you're getting enough food to feel satisfied.

And when you're hungry all the time, sticking to that plan becomes incredibly difficult.

I've experienced this myself.

When I was preparing for bikini competitions, I needed to get lean enough to step on stage. But I knew that simply eating less wasn't going to get me there.

Instead, I focused on getting enough protein and fiber while eating a surprisingly large volume of food.

My protein target was around 120–140 grams per day, and my fiber target was approximately 25–35 grams.

There were evenings when I still had two full meals to eat, and I actually found myself complaining about having to eat more!

My brain kept telling me there was no way I could lose fat while eating that much. But I trusted the process.

And it worked.

After competition, I transitioned back to a sustainable calorie intake and a body composition that felt right for me.

My goals and nutritional targets have changed since then, but the underlying principle hasn't:

High protein. High fiber. High volume. High nutrients.

You Don't Have to Eat Tiny Portions to Lose Fat

Here's something I want you to understand.

Being in a calorie deficit doesn't mean you have to feel hungry all day or survive on tiny meals.

The goal is to create a modest calorie deficit while choosing foods that help you feel full, support your muscles, and provide the nutrients your body needs.

That's where high-volume eating comes in.

Instead of focusing entirely on reducing how much food is on your plate, start thinking about what you're putting on it.

Whole, nutrient-dense foods can give you a much larger portion for the same number of calories compared with many processed, low-volume alternatives.

And that makes a difference when you're trying to build an approach you can actually stick with.

A Better Approach to Weight Loss After 50

Rather than constantly trying to eat less, start focusing on eating more of the right things.

Think about:

  • Getting enough protein to support muscle.

  • Including fiber-rich foods to help you feel satisfied.

  • Adding water-rich vegetables to increase meal volume.

  • Choosing nutrient-dense foods that support your overall health.

You don't need to overhaul your entire diet overnight.

Start by looking at your next meal and asking yourself: Am I getting enough protein? Where is my fiber? How much water-rich food is on my plate?

That simple check-in can help you start building better habits.

And remember, the goal isn't to spend the rest of your life dieting. It's to find an approach that supports your body, your health, and the life you want to live.
